As Labor Day approaches, it is the time of the season that we all enjoy-COLLEGE FOOTBALL SEASON!! Whether you pull for UGA, GT, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, FSU, Tennessee or any other college, you know when your team is kicking off to start the season! With that in mind and with the assistance of the GSCPA staff, we are going to have a GSCPA College Football Pick Em Contest. Each week I will create a new blog post with a list of 15 games scheduled for the upcoming weekend. I will show who is the home team and the visitor. You pick who you think will win the game for each of the 15 games via a comment on the blog post. Also, there will be a tiebreaker which is the team playing in the 15 games selected that scores the most points. All your selections will be viewed by others via the comments below , so you can see how you did (are doing) versus all other people making their selections. The one that picks the most games correctly, including the tiebreaker,  will be declared the winner. The winner each week, will win a voucher for a 1 hour On-Demand CPE course from the GSCPA Online Learning Center. So not only can you enjoy watching and enjoying college football but you can meet your CPE requirements, also! Does the “one and done” rule hurt college basketball?

Written by: Stewart Carlin

As you look at the NBA past and present, you see many players that went to the NBA without either going to college or not completing their degree while in college. Just think Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, Kevin Durant, and Lebron James to name a few. But while this may have helped the NBA with “star” power what about college basketball?

There is no single issue that has changed the landscape of college basketball more than the “one and done” rule allowing freshman to declare for the NBA Draft. Coincidentally, college basketball has become in some ways a “minor  league” proving ground to the NBA. Time and time again, a player’s potential or “stock” is taken my the media and coaches during the season, all to determine where that player should go in the NBA Draft.

Today’s top college players (think John Wall, Demarcus Cousins from last year’s Kentucky team, Derrick Favors from GT) are likely to play one year of college basketball and then make the jump to the NBA. But college basketball has stood idly by and watched players register for 2 semesters and then the move to the professional ranks. However, this “one and done” rule has created more problems for the college game than any imagined. Most fans of college basketball realize that is a “necessary evil” to recruit some of the most talented players in the country with the knowledge those players will only play one or maybe two years of college basketball. But has college basketball benefited from it? My thought is that the answer to the question is NO college basketball has not benefited from this “one and done” rule. Read the rest of this entry »

College Basketball at Death’s Door?

Written by: Stewart Carlin

Now that the college football season has ended with Auburn winning the national championship (5th in a row for the SEC), now we turn our attention to college basketball. I could discuss the resurgence of the basketball program at UGA, under the leadership of Mark Fox. Or bemoan the decline of the basketball program at Georgia tech under the tutelage of Paul Hewitt.
However, the game of college basketball is facing many issues. I want to discuss a couple of these issues in this blog and hot a few more in my next blog. The issues are I want to discuss now are:

1) The college basketball season starts too early when most fans attention is riveted to college football. Who cares what happens in mid-November and December in college basketball? Read the rest of this entry »

You should go buy a lottery ticket

Written by: Stewart Carlin

Those were the words from Dale, the sales person at the Town Center A T and T store, as I left with the new Iphone 4 32G. He called me the luckiest person in the world. Earlier, I did not feel so lucky. Let me explain:

On my way home I saw that a friend had called, left me a voice message. I put on my hands free Motorola Blue tooth device so I would not distract from my driving and called my friend back. We chatted for awhile until I noticed that I need to get gas. I pulled into the gas station, still talking on the phone, starting pumping the gas when I noticed that the signal strength was a little weak with my Blue tooth device. So I reached into my car grabbed my phone and put it on the roof of my car. The signal strength increased immediately after placing the phone on the roof of the car. You can guess what happened next. I finished pumping the gas, got into my car, continued to carry on my telephone conversation, all while my Iphone rested on the roof of my car. it was only after I accelerated onto the interstate and heard a sound of something hitting the trunk lid and then my telephone conversation suddenly end, that I remembered that my Iphone was not in my car but on the ROOF of my car and that was the phone hitting the trunk then the interstate.
