Teaching Accounting

Have you ever thought about teaching accounting? Many professionals tell me that they have when they find out I’m a college professor. So if you’ve ever considered it but weren’t sure where to start, here’s the basics.
First of all, it’s important to note that college professors don’t just teach. In fact, if you go to most larger schools, you may not teach more than a few classes a year. This is because professors at these schools are also expected to research. Professors also serve on committees for the college as a whole, as well as maintain contact with the professional community in some way or another. Personally, I never wanted to research beyond my dissertation, so I accepted a position at a smaller school where I teach (a lot). There are many choices out there. Read the rest of this entry »
What’s Right with Today’s Kids?

I teach Generation Y all day and then I come home to seven more of them at night. If anyone should know what’s wrong with today’s kids, it should be me. But if I were to write this post on that, I wouldn’t really have much to say, because there’s so much right with our young people. Granted, I spend most of my time with accounting majors, and they do tend to be smarter, better looking, and generally more fabulous than the rest of the population, but I also teach a class of freshmen from all majors as well as my Christian Yoga class. Yoga

Happy Birthday, Dr. King! I imagine for many of you reading this, busy season has already begun or is about to begin. I was thinking about you this week during my January class – Christian Yoga. My class and I spent the week at the Monastery of the Holy Spirit in Conyers. Such peace! It’s a great place to go to get away from it all. But what if you can’t get away? What if taking even a day for yourself seems impossible? Then I think you have to take moments. We all have periods of high stress and pressure, but surely busy season ranks up there near the top somewhere. I do have seven children, all adopted and all between the ages of 10 and 13.
