Counting Down

Written by: Jeff Wells

Countdowns come in many different fashions. Casey Kasem was able to develop his own type of countdown which leads up to the number one hit in the land for that particular week. There is the yearly countdown we experience every New Years Eve, highlighted by the falling of fruit during the waning seconds of the year. Then there’s the countdown many experience while waiting for a particular event to arrive. Some count down to the start of a vacation, while others countdown to an anticipated movie to be released. I’m in the middle of a countdown right now that has been three years and 10 months in the making. I’m counting down the days until the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

The FIFA World Cup is held every four years and is the pinnacle of all sporting events. The tournament lasts one month and will have over 1 billion viewers watch The Final. That’s billion, with a B. And that’s a conservative estimate. As of this writing, on May 19, 2010, the countdown to the beginning of the tournament is down to 23 days. I am not alone in this countdown, as a large portion of the world is counting down with me. Read the rest of this entry »

Pura Vida

Travel can often be viewed as a great educational tool, not just a chance to catch some rest & relaxation. The different natural wonders all coexist in a wonderful display of incredible beauty that seem to make each other all the more impressive. Mother Nature certainly spent a lot of time on this beautiful country. Read the rest of this entry »

Spring is Knocking on the Door

Written by: Jeff Wells

Spring officially starts on Saturday, March 20th, bringing to end a rather long and cold winter, at least on southern standards. I am from the south, and I am not used to such conditions. While I do appreciate having four distinct seasons, I am from the school of thought that the season we currently find ourselves in should be, by far, the shortest.

Winter does have advantages, and I would like to outline just a few before I get back to the knocking I hear at my front door. A strong winter can help diminish certain bug and pest populations, as all dog owners are aware. And many of the farmers from our nation’s heartland will say that winter is a vital time of year to maintain continued growing seasons. I am no expert in soil health, but that is what I have read. And if it helps farmers, then I’m all for it. Read the rest of this entry »

Decisions, decisions, decisions….

Written by: Jeff Wells

Often in life, you are faced with decisions to make. Actually, just about every waking hour you have you are faced with various decisions to make. Some are mundane and no-brainers, while others are the type that make you sit down and really think. For example, making the decision to join the Society and become an integral part in its success was a decision that required you to sit down and weigh your options. Or perhaps for some of you, it was a no-brainer to join. I’ve learned that the decisions that make you sit down and really think are a good exercise to go through from time to time.
