Enjoying the Hostess City!
Written by: Elizabeth Kistler
Have you ever been to Savannah, Georgia? Personally I have enjoyed a great amount of time in the area, but I was shocked to learn that many of our volunteers and members have not had the pleasure of visiting. We recently held a Leadership Council meeting at the Hyatt right on River Street, and we were all reminded and/or introduced to Savannah as a Georgia treasure. The views are just extraordinary, and we easily walked to countless Savannah attractions – Ghost Tours, Historic Tours, Carriage Rides, River Street Sweets and a long list of restaurants. Oh the restaurants! The food in Savannah is extra special.
This week I got to not only enjoy shrimp and grits at the Olde Pink House and crispy flounder at Garibaldi’s, but I also had the great pleasure of meeting so many wonderful GSCPA members that call Savannah home. We enjoyed an evening of business after hours at the Cocktails and Professionals After Hours event at Vic’s on the River. I am so jealous that our Savannah area folks can head over there for happy hour anytime they please. What a great view, and the Southern Pigs in a Blanket are delish!
Overall, it was a great meeting, and I can’t tell you how much I enjoy seeing all of the GSCPA volunteers generating ideas and positive developments for the GSCPA. Savannah was the perfect setting. I look forward to getting back down there to enjoy a few more of my favorite restaurants – Cha Bella, Circa 1875 and Alligator Soul.
P.S. If I have sparked your interest in the “Hostess City,” consider attending the Savannah Tax Forum on December 1-2!
Good Times for a Great Cause

I recently attended the Texas Hold ‘Em Tournament hosted by The Educational Foundation and ADP. I have to say that I do look forward to these types of events, because they are a fun “interruption” to the week. I get to see GSCPA members that I have known for years AND meet new folks all at the same time.
As I was taking a little break from the crowd, I noticed that the attendance was a solid mix of young and old, students and fellows as well as varying areas of expertise. Even though everyone had their differences, they were all taking the opportunity to chat and discuss everything from professional news to their golf handicap. It was clear how much the groups was enjoying the chance to mix and mingle.
Since the tournament, I have been thinking about other chances for GSCPA members to take advantage of similar opportunities. I can list a handful right off the top of my head:
Cocktails and Professionals After Hours – the next one is right around the corner in Savannah, GA and the best part…..it is FREE for members!
Attend an upcoming conference – the end of the reporting year is upon us, and since you might need the CPE anyway, why not join fellow members at one of our in-person events?
Consider sharing your interests and talents with other members – we are a;; passionate about something, and the GSCPA can surely benefit from you and your passions. This form is super helpful for contributing.
It was a great night for a great cause – The Educational Foundation. Many thanks to ADP for hosting us, and I can’t wait for next year!
Cheers!
P.S. Aren’t these photos great!
Social Media Tips and Tricks

As some of you may know, a few of the GSCPA staff recently returned from a yearly educational conference known as Interchange. Interchange is hosted by the AICPA, and it is an awesome educational experience in which different state society staff members meet to exchange best practices, ideas, brag a little here and there and generally just pick up tools for the coming year.
This year the general theme was SOCIAL MEDIA. I know I can here you gasping from here…..
So, I want to share some of the very cool tips and tricks that I picked up along the way. I am going to take the opportunity to highlight my favorites in the coming weeks. First and foremost, this article comes from Mashable. According to Wikipedia, Mashable is:
an Internet news blog, started by Pete Cashmore in July 2005. With a reported 7+ million monthly pageviews[3] and an Alexa ranking just over 400,[4] it ranks as one of the largest blogs on the Internet. Mashable regularly writes about YouTube, Facebook, Google, Twitter, MySpace, Apple and startups,[5] but it also reports on less high-profile social networking and social media sites.[1]
Mashable is popular on many social networks. As of December 21, 2009, it has over 1.8 million Twitter followers, over 90,000 fans on Facebook, and over 330,000 RSS subscribers.[3]
I would highly recommend checking out this site. You can search and sign up for email alerts. The Social Media and Business tabs are my personal favorites.

GSCPA Members are LinkedIn!

As I recently reported to the GSCPA Board of Directors, the GSCPA Linked In Group is growing larger and faster than any of our other social media outlets. Personally, I am thrilled to share this news, as it proves that GSCPA members are joining and using LinkedIn to advance their professional careers.
Having said that, I was recently contacted by Barry MacQuarrie, author of a fantastic blog on Social Media for Accountants. I encourage everyone to check it out and read through many of his posts. One of my favorite posts can be found here – I’m LinkedIn, Now What?

Happy Friday to everyone!
This morning I found a great article on Social Networking. While this article paints a “big picture” illustration of Social Networking, I would say this piece is for those that are slightly advanced in their knowledge of Social Networking and the platforms mentioned.
Enjoy!
