Entitlement

Entitlement – the topic I will rant rather than blog on for a little bit today..I have been teaching accounting for over 15 years now and I truly do love it..it is good to see a mind come alive, the eyes light up when the debit and credit connection clicks, the smile on the face when they now understand that both debits and credits giveth and taketh away, it just depends if you are on the outside of the window looking in or on the inside looking out..These students usually go on to pass the class with A’s and B’s..they are entitled to such a grade because they earned it.

It is the blank stares, closed eyes and yawns that frustrate me..no effort from a student to learn yet the end of the semester is culminated with the attitude that I have to pass them, they are on the hope scholarship or some other financial aid and they will lose it if they don’t pass..I have an obligation to pass them as they came to class, took the tests and sat in there twice a week for 17 weeks or so, texted messages on their phone, talk to someone else in class, sat in the very back corner or on the side, cap pulled down low over their eyes, computer screen on everything except the accounting lesson (yes, I do allow computers in class as most of the material is online).  No concept of the fact that they must expend the effort to earn the grade they receive, but feeling they are entitled to pass the class because someone else is paying for it, and if they don’t pass it, then the monies get cut off. Introducing Dale Cooper

Written by: Dale Cooper

My first blog..what to do?  First off, introduce myself..I am Dale Cooper, a practicing CPA here in Atlanta.  I work for a not for profit, tax exempt utility that builds transmission lines and substations.  I serve as Assistant Controller and really enjoy my job..it affords me time to do other things such as teaching Financial and Managerial Accounting for the last 15 years at Georgia Perimeter College, serving a three year stint as a member of the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel www.improveirs.org and more importantly to this first blog, my job allows me to involve myself in the Georgia Society of CPA’s. I’ll blog as time permits and if I have anything relevant to say.  Then again, the luxury of this forum is you can often blog just because you can.  You never know who takes an interest in what you say, so if you think it is worthwhile, blog away.

That said, I have been attending the Southeastern Accounting Show (SEAS) for many years: at the Galleria, the World Congress Center, the International Convention  Center at the airport.  I have listened intently and slept soundly. I have frozen my @#@$ off and sweated like the pig in the fire. I have eaten good food and wished I hadn’t eaten anything.  I have had every vendor sign my form and never won a damn thing! I have stuck my business card in every fishbowl there, gotten more follow up calls than I care to remember, found some excellent products to use in practice and also wondered just what were they thinking when they developed that product.  I have met new friends and colleagues and renewed old acquaintances and also remembered why I still don’t talk to others.
