The Value of a Fraud Risk Assessment

Everyone knows what a risk assessment is in practice. We as members of society perform risk assessments all the time. Think about the last time you purchased insurance of any kind. Also think about why you purchased it. As humans, we calculate the probability of loss from some abstract event which may or may not occur. In the case of car insurance, we anticipate that maybe, perhaps, at some point we could be in a car accident. Even though we have never had a car accident, we still buy insurance. And, even the law in Georgia says we must maintain a certain level of insurance. But, excluding the law, this is a perfect example of a reaction to risk: purchasing an insurance policy. Has Anyone Seen John?

“Has anyone seen John?” No, of course no one had seen him recently. I mean he sat in the front corner office near the door. His cubicle entrance was on the backside of the hallway, so you couldn’t see in unless you walked over and then you might have to speak to John. No one ever spoke to John really. Even the men in the office couldn’t recall seeing him in the restroom. And if they did, they never spoke. No one knew him really, so why would they know where he is?
John was hired as a bookkeeper. He had an impressive resume, had worked for some large companies and was taking a break from corporate America to focus on caring for his ailing mother in the small city of Pensacola, Florida. Or so he and his resume said. There was no need to perform due diligence on John, he started right away and worked 13 months without anyone really knowing a thing about him. Forensic science. Everyone has heard the term used. And, of course, we have all seen an episode of CSI before. I prefer Matlock personally, but the premise is the same. The images of detectives and forensic investigators dissecting clues to determine the perpetrator’s true identity. Ah, yes, they are exciting clffhangers. Like many mysteries wrapped into one hour with commercials. The definition of forensic science is a broad one: “Forensic science (often shortened to forensics) is the application of a broad spectrum of sciences to answer questions of interest …” Read the rest of this entry »
