Introducing Matt Tolan

Written by: Matt Tolan

Good day to all the blog readers of the GSCPA!  I think it’s fantastic that CPA’s or CPA candidates can have a place to not only share some information, but vent about things affecting their lives.  As an introduction, I am Matthew Tolan, currently a student trying to finish up my Master’s of Accounting at Kennesaw State University.  I graduated with a B.B.A. in Finance in 2007 from Kennesaw State University as well, and worked for E*TRADE Financial for nearly two years.  I then worked for a small proprietary trading firm for half of a year before going back to the books.  I do still have my Series 7 & 63 licenses which I am hoping to be able to use in a smaller public accounting firm.

I typically blog once or twice a month but am looking to bump that up to possibly once a week once this semester winds down.  As someone who already has a blog of my own, I tend to write honestly and objectively so there may be some personal reflection in these posts.  I also look forward to trying to give some information regarding a plethora of ideas, from general stock analysis and ideas to sports to computer building to music.  You could say that I am a jack of all trades, and master of a couple things.  I am also on twitter (@m_tolan) and on LinkedIn if you want to drop in to say “hey.” Read the rest of this entry »

Introducing Mark Stump – Work in Progress

Written by: Mark Stump

I’d like to begin my first foray into the House of Blog with a moment of full disclosure: I am not an accountant.

At least, that’s not how my business card describes me. It says that I’m an “Admissions Counselor/Recruiter.” And many of my friends would offer words such as “teacher,” “musician,” or “armchair philosopher,” but probably not “accountant.”

Nevertheless, all of that is changing. My career is just as much of a work in progress as it ever has been: I enlisted in the US Army upon graduating from my bachelor’s program, left the Army to bum around and clean windows for a year, and since have moved into the field of education. All of these experiences have taken me from one step to the next, leading me to you today. Read the rest of this entry »

Introducing Dale Cooper

Written by: Dale Cooper

My first blog..what to do?  First off, introduce myself..I am Dale Cooper, a practicing CPA here in Atlanta.  I work for a not for profit, tax exempt utility that builds transmission lines and substations.  I serve as Assistant Controller and really enjoy my job..it affords me time to do other things such as teaching Financial and Managerial Accounting for the last 15 years at Georgia Perimeter College, serving a three year stint as a member of the Taxpayer Advocacy Panel www.improveirs.org and more importantly to this first blog, my job allows me to involve myself in the Georgia Society of CPA’s. I’ll blog as time permits and if I have anything relevant to say.  Then again, the luxury of this forum is you can often blog just because you can.  You never know who takes an interest in what you say, so if you think it is worthwhile, blog away.

That said, I have been attending the Southeastern Accounting Show (SEAS) for many years: at the Galleria, the World Congress Center, the International Convention  Center at the airport.  I have listened intently and slept soundly. I have frozen my @#@$ off and sweated like the pig in the fire. I have eaten good food and wished I hadn’t eaten anything.  I have had every vendor sign my form and never won a damn thing! I have stuck my business card in every fishbowl there, gotten more follow up calls than I care to remember, found some excellent products to use in practice and also wondered just what were they thinking when they developed that product.  I have met new friends and colleagues and renewed old acquaintances and also remembered why I still don’t talk to others. Introducing Alina Kirillina

Written by: Alina Kirillina

I had no idea that the word “blog” is a contraction of the term “web log” until I read Nikelle’s introductory post.  For one reason or another, the idea never appealed to me much…that is until I stumbled upon the House of Blogs website one day and read what other accountants had to say.  Who knew that we bean counters could be so creative and, dare I say it, interesting?!  Out of inspiration from the other GSCPA bloggers, I am going to summon my modest literary skills and give blogging a try.

As I am a novice to the blogging process, my posts will be general until I can figure out the particular value I can bring to the House of Blogs.  Actually, I am also a novice to public accounting and being a CPA.  My license was issued less than a month ago and I celebrated (yes, celebrated!) my first anniversary with my firm in late May.  I also recently became a member of the GSCPA’s College Outreach Task Force and am passionate about bridging the gap between universities and the “real world.”  I would like to think that my lack of experience actually aids me in relating to students, even those who are still ignorant to the fact that a job in public accounting is anything but 9 to 5. Introducing Greg DeFoor

Written by: Greg DeFoor
My name is Greg DeFoor and I am going to be a blogger from time to time. I wanted to use my first blog to introduce myself. I am a CPA licensed in both Alabama and Georgia and also a Certified Fraud Examiner. I am one of those corporate America exiles that started my career in public accounting, transitioned into executive positions in private industry, and then transitioned back to public practice. However, I started my own firm in 2002 on my own initiative due to corporate burnout, not from displacement, so I took the plunge before the recession. I have been a CPA for over 25 years.

I’m a self professed numbers nerd. I love accounting and the different opportunities presented from an accounting background. I’ve had a number of experiences to draw on and will be blogging about things that hopefully will beneift you professionally, and sometimes maybe personally. I refer to myself as “The Casual CPA”. One definition of casual is “employed for irregular periods”. Isn’t that true about the CPA profession? We spend time working on projects that generate fees but if you are in your own practice like I am, we also spend time trying to become employed by marketing, networking, and in real simple terms, drumming up business. We definitely are “employed for irregular periods”. Read the rest of this entry »
