Jigsaw Puzzles Are GOOD For Your Mind. Yeah right … and I’m from the IRS and I’m here to HELP you…

Written by: Colin Blalock, The Pessimistic Optimist

Ever wonder if you will know that it is time to “hang it up?”  There is a saying that “Old Accountants NEVER die, they just lose their balance.”

I have a friend that invites people over to help her put together jigsaw puzzles.  It is never an easy jigsaw puzzle; she usually gets one with over 1,500 pieces.  In addition, it usually has the same muted colors throughout the picture.  I enjoy going and visiting with friends, but I rarely partake in working on the puzzle.  My philosophy is that if I am going to work on a mess and get it into something that is useful and orderly, I will go to work.  I can tackle a tax return or an IRS tax controversy and bill for my time.  That is what I do in my professional capacity,   I’m a problem solver.

One of my co-workers gave me the story below.  It has been adapted to focus on the true CPA.  After reading the story I think you will agree, this may be a watershed moment and time to start cutting back at work.

A little silver-haired CPA calls several neighbors and says, “Please come over here and help me.  I have a killer jigsaw puzzle, and I can’t figure out how to get started.”

One of his neighbors asks, “What is it supposed to be when it’s finished?”  The little silver haired man says, “According to the picture on the box, it’s a rooster.”

Finally after making several calls the CPA finds a neighbor two doors down that will come over and help his friend with the puzzle.

The old CPA lets the neighbor in and shows him where the puzzle has been spread all over the table.

The neighbor studies the pieces for a moment, looks at the box, then turns to the little old man and says, “First of all, no matter what we do, we’re not going to be able to assemble these pieces into anything resembling a rooster.”

He pats the old CPA on the shoulder and says, “Secondly, I want you to relax.  Let’s have a nice cup of tea, and then,” he said with a deep sigh …………

“Let’s put all the Corn Flakes back in the box.”

That is when you know it is time.  Some days I feel like I’m getting very close.

Colin…I tell people in my office that we really work in a sewer…People bring us a bunch of crap and we have to clean it up and sanatize it.

If it were not crap they would not bring it to us so be thankful for what you get…

Have not gotten to the cornflake puzzel yet but am getting a lot closer…
